Differences

It is amazing to watch how the Girl and Little Dude are two completely individuals despite the fact that I am raising pretty much the same way:

The girl was a horrible sleeper until she was 10 months old, when we did sleep training. Little Dude already sleeps from 8:30 to 3:00 AM and then until 8:00 - 8:30 almost every morning!

The Girl was pretty fast on mastering physical stuff such as rolling, sitting etc. Little Dude could care less for tummy time and it is not interested in rolling yet.

For some reason, we seem to remember that the girl smiled closer to three months. Little Dude has been smiling since he was 5 weeks and is now giggling and laughing pretty hard.

The Girl has never been too cuddly. I can't get enough of how cuddly Little Dude is! He loves being kissed and hugged all the time.

The girl could care less (and still does) if her diaper was dirty. Little Dude loves having his diaper changed.

I'm sure this list is going to keep growing as time goes by. I'm just fascinated by how different and individual they are. Hopefully they will both turn out to be sweet happy children!

Photo Safari

One of my Christmas Presents from the husband was a gift certificate for a 4 hour photography class around the DC Monuments. Between being really pregnant at the time, having a baby and getting breastfeeding established, it wasn't until 6 months later that I was able to use my gift.

It was the best Saturday morning I've had in a while. From walking and taking Metro by myself, with a backpack that only contained my camera and lenses, to learning something new while meeting interesting people, I simply had a blast. I wish I could do this at least once a month, since the classes are a bit expensive. It was simply wonderful. I'll let the pictures tell the rest of the story:

The Girl and Her Dog

Sabrina, our doggy, was looking sick yesterday. Her eyes were red and with lots of gooey stuff. The girl noticed it right away and came over to announce to us that the doggy's eyes were "very very eewy".

We explained to her that the doggy was sick and she was not feeling well. This did not sit well with the girl. She became obsessed with Sabrina's well being and tried as hard as she could to make her feel better. First, she got her toy violin and decided that a serenade might make the doggy feel better. Sabrina sat patiently and listened to the music, even though I thought it probably hurt her ears more that it soothe her. Then the girl brought over her Zoe doll and laid it next to the doggy. She kept repeating over and over that Sabrina was sick and that her eyes were very, very eewy. There were lots of patting and kisses thrown and maybe finally Sabrina got the point that this girl, who pushed her to a lower spot on the pack the day she was born,is her biggest allied.

Today as soon as the girl woke up, she asked for the doggy and reported that she was looking much better. Still, I trekked to the vet's office with little dude on the carrier, girl on one hand and dog on the other (not an easy errand to run). The girl paid close attention to everything the vet did and was quite marveled at how brave Sabrina was. The doggy has nothing more than an eye irritation but there is one thing clear out of this little episode. . . the girl loves her doggy and there is no messing with that! Welcome home empathy!

Itsy Bitsy Spider

Today I spotted a spider in the girl's room. I'm not terrified of spiders, but I'm not crazy about them either. After finding our visitor, I grabbed a tissue paper and was about to take care of business when the girl spotted it and said: "the Itsy Bitsy Spider!" and started singing the song. Suddenly my murder attempt got halted. How could I kill the Itsy Bitsy Spider in front of her!

Next thing I know she's reaching out to pet him. I almost yelled no, but then I realized that she has no reason to be afraid of spiders. After all, as far as she knows, all they do is go up and down the water spout. I bit my tongue and luckily the spider was more scared of the girl than I was, so he ran away.

All afternoon, the girl kept talking about the Itsy Bitsy Spider in her room. Her dad and I decided instead, to capture the spider and set him free outside so he could live happily ever after and eat tons of little bugs. So right before her bedtime the girl found the Itsy Bitsy Spider again (don't ask me how) and we took him outside and the three of us waved him good bye and wished him a happy life in our backyard. I have a suspicion that this is the first of many farewells for all sorts of bugs, reptiles, birds and who knows what else, we'll have.

One thing I can tell you is that as of right now, that Itsy Bitsy Spider is probably being washed out by the pouring rain outside! Come to think of it, we did set him free close to our water spout! Bye, bye, Itsy Bitsy Spider!

Mother's Day

I had a lovely Mother's Day yesterday. The kiddies behaved really well and the husband cooked an amazing dinner, worthy of a restaurant. However, my Mother's Day came really close to being a complete disaster!

While the husband was cooking, we both thought that Little Dude would be better off if he hung out on top of the counter in his portable swing so he could see us better (I know what you are thinking and you are absolutely right). He fell asleep, so we left him there and welcomed the break. About 20 minutes later I came back to the kitchen to make lunch and to my horror I realized that the little swing had traveled on top of the counter and one of the corners was already hanging outside the edge. Had I come into the kitchen 5 minutes later, that little swing would have tipped over and I don't want to think about how badly Little Dude would have hurt himself. Both the husband and I were livid with fear, bewildered at our luck, and trying really hard not to think about what could have happened. We picked up the swing, put it on the floor (Little Dude was still sleeping-he had no idea) and hugged each other.

It took me a while to calm down and to stop thinking of all the worst scenarios. I guess that's what motherhood is all about. Protecting those little ones, always having their best interest and safety at hand, worrying, celebrating, sitting on the floor endless time to play with puzzles, watching that Elmo DVD over and over, hugging, kissing, comforting, rocking, teaching and disciplining too.

I thank God for making me go into the kitchen when I did, and I am so grateful to my family for a beautiful Mother's Day!
